Nordic String Gems open the OCO’s Spring Season

Nordic String Gems open the OCO’s Spring Season

- beloved pieces performed under the direction of Malin Broman

The Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra (OCO) and Malin Broman kick off the year with music for string orchestra by nordic composers. The concert will be performed both at the Virta Hall in Kalajoki and at the Conservatory Hall in Kokkola. The concert will feature works specifically requested by the audience.

The concert programme scheduled for Thursday, January 11th in Kalajoki and Friday, January 12th in Kokkola includes both older and newer string orchestra pieces by Nordic composers. Among these are names of composers and works requested by the audience. The orchestra's artistic director, Malin Broman, will lead the concert from the concertmaster's chair.

Naturally, Finland is represented by our national composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957), with the performance of Sibelius' suite for string orchestra  Rakastava' op. 14. Originally composed for choir, this piece is one of the most popular smaller orchestral works. Additionally, Sibelius' melancholic piece 'Canzonetta,' op. 62a, originally composed for a play by Arvid Järnefelt, will also be performed.

The concert will delve into more romantic music with Norway's most renowned composer, Edvard Grieg's (1843-1907) String Quartet in G minor, op. 27, presented in an arrangement for string orchestra. Denmark is represented by a new acquaintance, Nancy Dalberg (1881-1949) and her Scherzo, op. 6. Dalberg primarily composed chamber music but was also the first female Danish composer to write a symphony.

Swedish music is also part of the program, as Andrea Tarrodi's (b. 1981) piece 'Birds of Paradise I' from 2008 opens the concert evening. Tarrodi is one of the most prominent composers of her generation in Sweden at present, and her music has been performed by orchestra’s such as the BBC Philharmonic and Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. Tarrodi's music is also featured on MÖK's latest album, with Malin Broman and Pekka Kuusisto as soloists.

During the Kokkola concert, Malin Broman will discuss the concert program and the upcoming spring season together with the OCO’s  producer Emilia Otava; the pre-concert talk starts at 6:15 PM in the Conservatory’s upper foyer.

Season and concert tickets are available for purchase starting from January 2nd via www.netticket.fi. The Conservatory's concert hall will continue to serve as the OCO’s home venue for this spring season, but concerts will also take place in the churches of Kokkola and at the Campus Hall.

Tickets for the guest performance in Kalajoki can be purchased via www.lippu.fi.
