Season opening with Malin Broman and the OCO

- Britten's Serenade will be interpreted by German tenor Moritz Kallenberg and french horn player Paula Ernesaks

The Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra (OCO) and its Artistic Director Malin Broman are opening the Autumn season with a concert on Friday 8th of September with a programme consisting of symphonies both from the baroque and the romantic era. While waiting for the new Music Centre Snellman the orchestra continues to give concerts in the Conservatory Hall in Kokkola.

During the concert on Friday evening Benjamin Britten's (1913-1976) Serenade for tenor, french horn and string orchestra op. 31 will be performed with Moritz Kallenberg and Paula Ernesaks. Both of them are performing as OCO's soloists for the first time.

The concert starts off with baroque composer Carl Friedrich Abel (1723-1787) and his Symphony No 4 in C Major. Abel was born in Germany, but spent much of his time in England as a chamber musician at the court of queen Charlotte. He also held popular public concerts together with Johann Christian Bach. Abel wrote close to 60 symphonies, which naturally are representing the early form of symphonies.

The second symphony for the evening is heard after the interval: Franz Schubert's (1797-1828) Symphony No 5 in B Flat Major is inspired by Mozart and Haydn, but Schubert's own characteristic romantic style is also very much present.

Swedish contemporary composer Britta Byström (f.1977) is one of Sweden's most sought-after composers: her music has been performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and she has written pieces for artists such as Janine Jansen and Radovan Vlatkovic. The piece in this concert, A walk to Schubert’s Fifth Symphony, comments on the material of Schubert's symphony.

Before the concert the audience gets to meet the concert's
artists, learn about the music to be performed and see inside the orchestra: the pre-concert talk is chaired by the OCO's outreach planner and producer Emilia Otava and starts at 6.15 pm.
